This JET planer/molder features a sturdy cast-iron table, mounted on four precision-ground steel columns for reduced vibration and smooth feeding. It has fully adjustable rubber-coated infeed and outfeed rollers, with a 1-1/2-horsepower motor, which is fully enclosed, fan cooled, and is located at the base of the machine to protect it from wood chips and dust. The two matched V-belts deliver full power to the three-knife cutterhead, while the two-speed gearbox provides smooth molding and fast planing. Comment: was looking at smaller ones, a fraction of the price, decided what the heck. works well, caution!!!!!, unless you have the dust collector, which must be very large (i am resawing lumber fron a job, then surfacing) do not use the exhaust shoot, it will plug up. leave off and let the chips fly. chose for power capabilities and board size. would have liked to get something around 24" wide, but that for me would not have been able to, dollars not the issue just noise and a large and noisy dust collector. not sure about open cabinet, probably works well also. would not go any smaller.

Comment: I am pleased with the planer. I build decorative wood boxes and some easy-to-build furniture. I have been using it daily now for over a month. It assembled easily and was up and running in about 1/2 hour.

This planer is very well built and sits on a sturdy stand. The wheels on it allow it to be moved around as needed in my shop on the rare occasion this is necessary. It is exact and powerful. While I could use 220v, I use it as 110v and the planer has all the power needed that suits my purposes. The in-feed and out-feed roller tables are fully adjustable and reduce, if not eliminate the snipe completely.

With a rebate I payed $[...] with the shipping included. I checked out the other brands before I purchased, including the bench top models, reading all the reviews here on Amazon, other web sites and at Fine Woodworking. I went with the Jet 708524 JPM-13CS. (I put the model so there is no confusion) For just a little more money you take a giant step up. This is a very good mid quality and price planer. I am glad I purchased it recommend it and would buy again.

Summary: Being Frank from Virginia
Comment: I purchased my Jet 13" Planer/Molder at a trade show for $695 in 1997. I previously used a 12" Delta for my furniture and finished carpentry work.
For some reason I haven't bonded with it after 10 years. I haven't got it out of the 10fpm mode because it seems like it was going to stall in some oak and hickory lumber even at a light setting. The biggest gripe I have is with the old fashion wedge system of securing the blades which takes me about 20 to 30 minutes to do (the Delta spring loaded system takes about 5 minutes). I guess I'm going to give it another chance since my Delta fell off the table onto a concrete floor.

Summary: You won't go wrong here...
Comment: I suppose I lucked out when I searched [...] When you use this tool, deffinately lower the flange of the dust chute and close the gap between the orange plate and the knife blades. This combined with a vacuum system will virtually eliminate chips/dust. Much more pleasant to use now since I have 80% less mess to clean up! Additionally, I suggest cutting a piece of plywood 13"x48" to all but eliminate the dreaded SNIPE... This board needs to be clamped to the tool bed and thus allows for a longer support. The rollers although neat and useful in their own way don't really give enough support to take care of the snipe.

The only real improvements in my opinion would be to make a quick disconnect for the dust chute/top cover to allow for easier on/off needs. As of now you gotta unscrew a few screws but is that even a really big deal? Secondly the video should be DVD not VHS, who still watches those? Finally, JET should supply the set-up/gauge blocks for this machine. If they supplied them wouldn't that take out the possible error of making them yourself to gauge the roller to knife offset?

Summary: JET 13 Planer/Molder -- GREAT
Comment: I just bought this at local wood hobby store, initials WC. Their price was $800; I called on phone and asked if any coupons were out that I should be aware of, and the manager yelled at the salesman to honor a 10% coupon coming out in late July. This is the third time they have done this for me. I planed about 150 feet of american cherry and brazilian cherry. This unit works GREAT. Other than adjusting the rollers, it worked just fine with no adjustments. The 3 inches of snipe others commented on can be eliminated by properly supporting on in feed and out feed. I did have 1 or 2 runs with some snipe throughout the piece, but I just continued to run it through with nominal cuts and it was eliminated. My guess is that certain wood characteristics come together on a piece of wood to make it more prevalent, but it can be eliminated. Highly recommend this unit.
