We’d wager that about 95 percent of the instances you use a circular saw, this little dynamo would be your saw of choice. Stacked up next to the 7-1/4-inch saws, some of which weigh twice as much as this one, it sacrifices nothing in power or performance, but it’s so much easier to use that the bigger boys in your toolbox would be gathering some dust.
It’s an amazingly light 6-1/2 pounds, and quite honestly, it feels like a toy when you first pick it up. But don’t be fooled by its petite dimensions. It plows across a 2-by-8 like nobody’s business, and if you’re used to a bigger, heavier circular saw, you can’t help but be delighted by how beautifully it handles. Taking it through a ¾-inch sheet is a joyride.
The left-side blade is perfect for right-handers, offering a nice clear sightline, and all the adjustments are convenient and easy to use. The bevel lever is up front, and the action is smooth and easy to set precisely. Depth of cut adjusts from the back, and that, too, is done easily.
If there are any caveats, we think it would be only that your capacity is slightly less with this little Skil as opposed to a bigger model, in that you can’t cut a 45-degree bevel on 2-by stock with this, and you’re at your max depth of cut at 90 degrees on a 2-by.
For everything else, this is an absolute beauty of a saw that will never tax your back, your shoulder or your arm. Contractors who find themselves climbing ladders or working on scaffolds will especially love this saw, as well as homeowners who don’t feel confident taking on a beefy saw but still want to get the job done. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Summary: A dropper
Comment: Love this saw. Great for right hand cutting. I stocked up way back on saw blades, so I do not know about how hard they are to find now, but I'm going to look today. I have 2 other big saws and have not used them since getting this 6 years ago. If you can find one try it!!!!

Summary: Skil HD5510 5-1/2-Inch Circular Saw
Comment: I wish I had owned this saw many years (if it existed then) ago. It's a pleasure to use. I have a Skil worm drive (which is another great saw) but it's very heavy for small jobs/pieces. This saw really does a great job with the only draw back being that it's a bit hard finding blades sometimes. HD & Lowes do not carry blades for this saw so you need to go to Ace Hardware or order them over the Internet.

Summary: Very hard to find the right blade
Comment: The saw itself is a wonderful addition to anyone's arsenal. It is powerful and light enough to use all day without getting fatigued. The adjustments work smoothly and the controls all seem to be in the right place. But...(and it's a huge but), you will really have a hard time finding the right blade for it. In fact you will have a hard time finding any blade for it. It uses a 5 1/2" blade with 1/2" arbor and while finding 5 1/2" blades is difficult enough...finding one with a 1/2" arbor hole is downright impossible! Even Skill seems to have forgotten about this saw and it's loyal group of followers. They only carry a cheap steel plywood blade and an 18 tooth version of carbide as far as I can tell. You will be able to find blades with 10 millimeters and 3/8" holes or you will find 5 3/8" blades but trying to find a 5 1/2" quality blade 24 tooth (or more) with a 1/2" arbor hole will make you pull your hair out. In the end it's a nice saw but none of that matters when it comes time for your next blade so I'd have to recommend going to Porter Cable and their 6" Saw Boss or down to a cordless 5 3/8" if you don't want to waste days trying to justify your purchase.

Summary: great little saw
Comment: I do remodels. bought this saw a yr ago after using another old 5 1/2 for many yrs. This is the easiest cutting saw I have ever used. Handle position is great for straight cuts. cross cuts on 2Xs are a breeze. no problem using a rip guide for long, straight, accurate cuts.
Only drawback is blade selection, as mentioned before. Only have 1 tooth choice locally of carbide blades.
After several cross jobs with different crews, everyone who picks it up & makes just 1 cut, loves the saw.
This is one tool I recommend without qualification.

Summary: What a Great Idea!
Comment: While I have't used it much, this saw is truly a joy to use. Be careful when buying blades. I bought a 5 1/2" blade thinking it would fit my HD5510.....wrong! Many of the smaller blades are for cordless saws with a 10mm arbor, while this saw has a 1/2" arbor. They are not interchangeable.
